we012 the Beige Channel Soundwalk on Shamian Island "I recorded this 12 minute Soundwalk along "Shamian Main Street" (Shamian Dajie), on Shamian Island, in the city of Guangzhou, China, on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, during the late afternoon. I used a Sound Professionals Stereo "T" microphone with a Sharp MS-722 minidisc recorder. This gorgeous location features lush vegetation on narrow streets filled with examples of British architecture from the 19th century, since Guangzhou was one of the very few Chinese cities to do trade with the West during that era. The White Swan hotel is host to families adopting children because each family must visit the US embassy before leaving the country. There are many small stores offering items for sale catering to American families, and many of the shopkeepers are outside their businesses trying to attract customers by engaging them in conversation (as you will notice in the recording)."
